    The establishment of a hospital for the relief of the insane poor of the state claimed the attention of the philanthropic at an early date. Worcester State Hospital History. On Januthe first public asylum for the insane in Massachusetts was opened on Summer Street in Worcester. It was called the Worcester Lunatic Asylum, and was found to be severely overcrowded within nine years of opening.

Worcester Insane Hospital was the first public asylum in Massachusetts, which was opened on Januand it was original called Bloomingdale Asylum. It was not long until the asylum was overcrowded. With the help of Dorothea Dix, Bloomingdale Asylum were able to receive funds to expand their hospital in order to fit all of their patients better.
